Chocolate Love Story

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Tuesday, March 30, 2010 0 comments
I like this kind of advertising! I read about this in AdAge last week and knew I had to share with everyone. Through crowd-sourcing in the form of submitted love stories, Kraft Foods created a 27-minute branded-entertainment film for Lacta chocolate bars in Greece. The film really is more of a love story than an advertisement, as the chocolate is only seen about five times throughout the entire film. The story is about two young people- a musician and an army recruit- who meet briefly on a train ride and have an instant connection It's obviously not the most well-made film I've ever seen, but it's a cute story and it's a really creative way to advertise, especially because they do not in any way inundate you with images or mentions of the product. Plus it combines two of my favorite things- chocolate and romance. Enjoy!

Add Some Flair to your Hair!

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Tuesday, March 30, 2010 0 comments

I quickly stopped in Ann Taylor Loft the other day and discovered their super cute line of spring headbands! I will be the first one to admit that I don’t wash my hair everyday and if you’re anything like me headbands are a great alternative to looking effortlessly chic while still providing a cover-up to any grease. I picked up the one with the oversize chiffon flower and received so many compliments when I wore it and actually was a great conversation starter!

Romantic Florals: The Garden Collection by H&M

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Tuesday, March 30, 2010 3 comments

H&M launched their Garden Collection last week, which consists of beautiful floral garments made with YES… organic fabrics including cotton, linen, recycled polyester and renewable tencel. According to the press release, the floral looks are inspired by chlorophyll-green gardens, sundrenched landscapes and even 70s hippie chic flower-power. The collection consists of 80 items and 10 accessories all under $60, perfect for the eco-fashionista! My favorite piece by far is the red rosette dress for only $39.99, I will need to get my hands on this very soon. I was also thinking of picking up that amazing watercolor skirt for Easter Sunday.

Miike Snow at Webster Hall

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Monday, March 29, 2010 0 comments
As you all know, I went to see Miike Snow perform on Saturday night at Webster Hall and it definitely lived up to all my expectations PLUS more. If you don’t know who Miike Snow is they are a Swedish electro-pop group who brought us Britney Spears “Toxic”. The band emerged onto the stage in Phantom of the Opera masks and began what was more of a dance party then a concert. Rave-like strobe lights and high beams all flashed in sync with their beats. They performed extended techno versions of most of their songs which kept the crowd hyped and continuously dancing. The entire experience was pretty euphoric and I would absolutely recommended seeing them next time they are in NYC.

Polish Up!

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, March 26, 2010 0 comments

If there is one thing that I love about the spring, it is the fact that I get to paint my nails in bright cheery colors to celebrate the sunshine. This spring I am loving the pastel tones and fruity colors. There are so many options this season that I am looking forward to trying out new ones each week, if my budget can support frequent mani's! Here are a few of our favorites:

Color: Essie- Van D’Go
Price: $ 8
Why We love it: This is by far the perfect shade of peach. The color is soft but still is quite bright, perfect for tan hands!

Color: Essie- Bermuda Shorts
Price: $8
Why We Love it: If you are looking for a neon purple this is the polish to get. It goes on matte at first but with an added clear coat it gives it added shine that looks awesome!

Color: Mac- Affair
Price: $12
Why We Love it: Well first off, this color is from Mac’s Love lace line which is no surprise that we like it so much. It’s a pale taupe grey with a hint of lavender. Its very wearable for the Spring if you are looking to take a break from the brights.

Color: Chanel -Orange Fizz
Price: $ 23
Why We Love it: Even though the name is Orange It’s more of a coral color. We love the vivid color when applied. Personally, I love using coral colors on my toes and this is one is adorbs!

Color: Sula Paint & Peel Nail Polish -Modern Mauve
Price: $ 9
Why We Love it: This non-toxic , water-based polish can easily be removed by peeling off in one clean sweep. The color is a pale lilac but when applied does not show up too light on the nail. We love the soft purples for this season.

Forever 21 with a touch of Gaga

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, March 25, 2010 0 comments

Brian Lichtenberg, who made Lady Gaga's caution-tape top in the Telephone video, is going to be collaborating with Forever 21 to create a line of graphic T-shirts. This is the first celebrity designer collaboration for the chain. At the moment, the collaboration is just in the works and an announcement will be made about release dates in the coming months. The L.A.-based designer's jewelry designs and stage costumes have been popular with artists besides Lady Gage, including Beyonce, Keri Hilson, and Rihanna. Just going off the fame of one top from one music video, I'm sure this partnership will be extremely beneficial for both Forever 21 and Brian Lichtenberg.

Liberty + Manolo

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, March 25, 2010 0 comments
London is calling my name... more specifically, Liberty is doing the calling. I didn't know much about the famed department store until about a month ago, but now I feel like I can't get away. First was the collaboration with Target, then a line of products with MAC Cosmetics, and now a collaboration with Manolo Blahnik. The first two are available stateside, but the "World of Manolo" in-store boutique will only be available at the London store. It opens in September, which sounds like a perfect time for a little trip across the Atlantic. Although Blahnik is known for shoes, there will be a range of items, including scarves, candles, shoehorns, Wellington boots, and notebooks, at the boutique. As I mentioned in the Liberty for Target post, the Liberty archives hold more than 43,000 prints and Blahnik has searched through all of them to select three 19th-century prints for his line of products. In addition, his fall footwear collection will be exclusive at Liberty and eight of his designs will be reworked with Liberty patterns. This is the first time he is selling the collection outside of his stores in the U.K. and also the first collaboration he said yes to. And this has just given me more motivation to start saving for my trip!

A Guy's perspective: Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't . . .

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 1 comments

. . . and this time I really didn't. I consider myself a good Catholic guy who's been around the block enough times to know that, when I'm in a committed relationship, I should keep it in my pants (in relation to women who are not my girlfriend). I haven't been in a relationship in a while, so I've done some things I shouldn't have in the past three years- specifically staying out late, drinking, and carousing. Unfortunately, I've become accustomed to my phone ringing or vibrating in the middle of the night. The difference is now I have my beloved sleeping peacefully next to me with her head on my chest. Since I didn't send out a citywide memo saying "I am no longer single, so stop pestering me," these girls continue to contact me. I am more than content with my girl, so I decide to not respond to these others. Eventually, most of them realized I'm off the market, but with some of them it's not so easy. One in particular thinks I'm playing hard to get, which entices her more. I tell my baby boo that this girl is just being persistent and that there's no need to worry, but that's not enough. I decide to take it upon myself to confront this girl at her the bar she works at and let her down easy. I respectfully ask her to not contact me anymore, since all I can think of is my super sexy girl.
I thought this was doing the right thing. Boy was I wrong! I leave the bar feeling good about what I've done for our relationship. I told my honeybun the whole story, trying to be as honest as I know how. I was shocked to receive a completely negative response for trying to do something so worthwhile and positive. A few day later the same girl decides to call me off the hook, probably 14 times. And of course the honest guy I am, I tell her. She asks for my phone and she, clearly and simply, texts the other girl to not talk to me anymore. She really was mad that I actually went to see this other chick, even though my intentions were genuine.

So that's my story, and I'm sorry! Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Empire State Building Shoes

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 0 comments

Since I work in what is arguably the most iconic building in NYC, it feels hard to get away sometimes. It's bad enough that I can see my office building from most places in the city, but even when I'm not in the city the building is featured in any TV show or movie based in New York. And guess what? I can now be reminded everyday even just looking down at my feet thanks to these Empire State Building Heels from Geox. I don't think I would ever get these, but if you want to wear this omnipresent symbol for $230, then these are for you.

Butt Bra?

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 0 comments

I'm one of those rare people who actually enjoys wearing shapewear and control-top stockings, but this is a little too weird, even for me. Biniki is a company that produces bras for your derriere. They developed the product to lift and define the butt, smooth out the back of the thighs, and (in their words) "beautify the backside." It is specifically designed for people with small or flat butts. Notice how I'm using the word people instead of women? That's because they carry a product for men too! Their three products are the Biniki, the Throng, and the Maniki. So you and your man can admire each other from the back, with or without clothing. When I first read about these I thought it was the strangest idea I've ever read about in fashion (and there are lots of weird things out there), but now I'm thinking they may have some merit. Why do we pay so attention to our fronts and essentially ignore the back? I'm not saying I'm trying em out anytime soon; they look extremely uncomfortable, but maybe it's not such a bad idea...

Eat, Love, Pray: Movie Trailer

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, March 19, 2010 0 comments

Sony released the trailer for “Eat, Pray, Love” earlier this week. The movie based on Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir, hits theaters this summer. I absolutely LOVED this book and I am looking forward to catching this in theaters. Although, I really hope the movie can live up to the book! The storyline is about a woman who basically has it all when she realizes that she wants more in life. After a painful divorce she embarks on a self-discovery journey across India, Italy, and Indonesia. With a all-star cast including Julia Roberts, James Franco, and Javier Bardem, it definitely will be a must-see this summer. And if you didn't read the book go out and get it!

PS. if you’re interested in the song that is featured in the trailer listen below!

Sweet Springtime

Hello Loves!

I have some serious spring fever! Tomorrow will be the first day of Spring and I can’t control my excitement. The fact that it’s supposed to be 71 degrees today in NYC also adds to my excitement. Thank goodness that it is finally time to lose all the bulky winter clothes. While online shopping today, I came across this über cute floral romper from Free People. The flirty floral print is perfect for gearing up for the spring. Rompers are definitely a must have for the sunny months to come.

Ralph Lauren First Ever Interactive Online Show

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, March 18, 2010 1 comments

Ralph Lauren premiered their first ever online fashion show yesterday. The real cool thing about is was that while watching the video you could purchase anything you liked straight off the runway. According to NBC New York, Ralph Lauren also created a virtual front row of four fashion editors -- Nina Garcia , fashion director for Marie Claire, Adam Glassman from O The Oprah Magazine, Avril Graham from Harper's Bazaar, and Michelle McCool from Cosmopolitan .

Each editor gave their own commentary as the models went down the “runway” and after the show, viewers were able to seek style advice from the editors . Ralph Lauren’s marketing strategy was very innovative and will no doubt influence other brands marketing strategies to come.

Sail Away

This beautiful spring weather has me daydreaming about summer and beach trips, so I thought talking about one of my favorite trends would be very fitting. I'm not even sure if I'd call it a trend, since I've been a huge fan for awhile now, but I love nautical style. It could be that it combines two of my favorites in fashion- navy blue and stripes- or that it makes me think of some combination of the beach and England/France. I guess everyone must be feeling the same as me because it's everywhere this season! From high-end designers down to stores like Forever 21 and H&M, everyone is doing some variation of nautical, which makes it that much easier to wear. The best thing about it is that you can buy different pieces, like a rope bracelet, a striped shirt, or sailor shorts, and use them to accent your personal style.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Wednesday, March 17, 2010 3 comments

Today on Glamour.com's Smitten blog, there were a few good cheap date ideas for St. Patrick's Day. I love celebrating holidays of any kind, so I enjoy finding new ways to celebrate them and these are some great ideas for romantic.

" 1. Whip up a few glasses of Irish Coffee and cuddle on the couch while watching Irish specials on TV. The History Channel has a few programs scheduled for tonight with the holiday in mind. I’m hoping they play something from the Cities of the Underground series!

2. Roll up your sleeves and cook a tasty dish inspired by The Emerald Isle.
My Grandparents make delicious and very unhealthy potato pancakes (seriously, bacon grease is involved!) for their Ancient Order of Hibernians meetings. The hotcakes are always a hit; they never have leftovers. This recipe is pretty close to theirs.

3. Slip on your comfy walking shoes and head out for an evening stroll. The two of you can look for four leaf clovers, or just pretty flowers.

4. Conversely, you could slip on your dancing shoes and stay in to have a Riverdance dance party. And no need to worry about a playlist; Pandora’s got a few St. Patrick’s Day themed stations! This idea works especially well if you’ve got an axe to grind with your neighbors.

5. Conveniently forget to wear green and tell your lucky lad that he can pinch your cheeks—and more in the bedroom. Bonus points if you try speaking in Irish accents. Is there anything hotter than an Irish brogue?"

I'm sure you can think of some other ideas, but these sounded like fun to me. Enjoy!

Wild Flowers

Spring is right around the corner (finally!) and we have a fixation on floral prints here in NYC. They are feminine, romantic, and playful. Add floral accessories to your outfit for added embellishment! I’m loving the ballet flats, so adorable!

Advice from Carolina Herrera

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1 comments

Last Friday, my last day of unemployment, I watched "Fashion Friday" on The View. Usually I find those ladies pretty irritating, but Carolina Herrera was their guest, so I decided to leave it on. She is such a fascinating woman and always looks fashionable, yet classic at the same time. I was pretty enthralled by her entire interview, but there was one specific piece of advice that I thought was pretty obvious, but so important: "Fashion is about proportion." This was in response to a question of how she appeared so statuesque in a photo despite being fairly short. Carolina pointed out an example of women wearing mini skirts without having the legs pull them off. This should be pretty self-explanatory, but there are still so many women out there who dress for the trends, even if it doesn't flatter their body type. I think this is so important to looking your best everytime you go out. I know plenty of people who may not have the body of a supermodel, but look fantastic everytime they're out because they know how to pick out clothes in the right proportions for their bodies. We're presented with new trends every season, but the trick is to know which ones to follow and which to skip. Play up your assets, by now I'm sure you've figured out what those are, and have fun creating your own personal style instead of buying ill-fitting and unflattering clothes every season just because someone tells you you should.

3.1 Phillip Lim Love

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, March 12, 2010 1 comments

As far as I'm concerned, Phillip Lim can do no wrong, so its no surprise I'm obsessed with this 3.1 Phillip Lim gold bracelet, featured on Style.com's Spring 2010 Accessory Report. While it's bolder than most bangles out there, it doesn't lose its feminine appeal. It almost looks like that sought after gold ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory all crumpled up. But I'd take this bangle any day over a trip to that creepy factory. Wear it to dress up a jeans and white tee, or add it to an already dazzling outfit for a little extra pop.

The Fur Dilemma

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, March 12, 2010 0 comments

The Fur Dilemma: When I was 10 I had a pet rabbit, Knickers. He was so cute with floppy ears and big brown eyes always hop hop hopping around my house. I even once bought him a leash to walk him around the neighborhood. I couldnt have a dog, so I'd walk my bunny damn it! Great childhood memories of that bunny.
So where exactly is this going? Day in and day out I am surrounded by glorious fur. Fur coats, fur hats, and what I covet the most fur vests. Every where I look there is another fabulous fur garment. I want a fur vest with every fiber of my being. I was in Neiman Marcus the other day and saw this AMAZING vest. So soft I didnt want to take it off, 100% rabbit fur and it was only $500 what a steal!! I brought it up to the sales counter and took out my Amex (because Neiman only takes Amex which is highly annoying, but maybe we will discuss that in a later post) And then I thought I saw something. Was it... Could it be...? A furry little bunny, who looked just like my beloved rabbit, hopping around this luxe department store? After confirming with my sister I was losing my mind I realized it was Knickers haunting my subconscious. "Kimmm don't buy that...Kimmmm that's my great great great great great grand niece (Bunnies do it a lot)!" The animal lover in me VS the fur vest coveter. I returned the vest to the rack and regretfully walked away. At the time it felt like the right thing to do, but weeks later I still long for that delicious fur vest. I blame my parents. If only I had be able to get a dog!

Chatroulette Contest?

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, March 12, 2010 1 comments
Chatroulette might not seem like the best thing for a brand to associate with, but U.K. based clothing retailer, French Connection, is doing just that. French Connection is known for their more racy campaigns (FCUK, anyone?), so this might not be so off bat for them. Their venture with Chatroulette is actually a contest. The first person to prove that he or she set up a date using the site wins $375 worth of shopping for a "real life date-worthy outfit." While this seems pretty easy, have you ever been on Chatroulette? I can't imagine setting up a date would be too easy with male genitalia making an appearance every few clicks.

Spring Trend: Clogs

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, March 11, 2010 1 comments
Lately clogs have been popping up everywhere. They made their vamped up debut in the Chanel 2010 Spring Barnyard show and now similar versions are being sold at Zara stores. At first I wasn’t a huge fan but have grown to love the chic transformation of the shoe once reserved for nurses. They are playful and sort of sexy. Plus they actually look pretty comfortable with the chunky wooden heel and rubberized sole . Paired with a bohemian dress I think they could be pretty fresh for Spring. Thank you Mr. Lagerfeld!

Love Letter: Ludwig van Beethoven

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, March 11, 2010 1 comments

Here's your dose of romance for today.

After Beethoven's death, three unsent love letters were found, addressed to his 'Immortal Beloved'. Her identity has never been established, but these letters make you kind of wish you were her. Here's my favorite of the three:

Good morning, on 7 July

Even in bed my ideas yearn towards you, my Immortal Beloved, here and there joyfully , then again sadly, awaiting from Fate, whether it will listen to us. I can only live, either altogether with you or not at all. Yes, I have determined to wander about for so long far away, until I can fly into your arms and call myself quite at home with you, can send my soul enveloped by yours into the realm of spirits-- yes, I regret, it must be. You will get over it all the more as you know my faithfulness to you; never another one can own my heart, never-- never! O God, why must one go away from what one loves so, and yet my life in W. as it is now is a miserable life. Your love made me the happiest and unhappiest at the same time. At my actual age I should need some continuity, sameness of life-- can that exist under our circumstances? Angel, I just hear that the post goes out every day-- and must close therefore, so that you get the L. at once. Be calm -- love me -- to-day -- yesterday.
What longing in tears for you-- You -- my Life -- my All -- farewell. Oh, go on loving me-- never doubt the faith-fullest heart
Of your beloved
L
Ever thine.
Ever mine.
Ever ours.

(Thanks to Love Letters of Great Men compiled by Ursula Doyle)
