Obsessed: Matt Schwartz Photography

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Thursday, April 29, 2010 8 comments
Do you remember in the movie Crazy Beautiful when Kirsten Dunst pulls apart the Polaroid she takes and transfers them into her journal by rubbing it onto the paper? I remember watching this and being fascinated by how cool it looked after. How come I can't be this creative? I  recently came across Brooklyn based photographer Matt Schwartz today and his prints instantly reminded me of this. I did a little research and found out that he uses the same technique, which is known as Polaroid transfer. I love the vintage and nostalgic feel of his photographs.

Schwartz's photos can be found at the Brooklyn Flea and his work can be viewed here

To Dye For! Add some Tie Dye to your Wardrobe

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Wednesday, April 28, 2010 12 comments
          Proenza Schouler

Tie Dye was seen all over the Spring runways and I have fallen in love with the eccentric dyed pieces. Whats great about this trend is that  it's really easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, just please don't wear the t-shirt you made in summer camp. If you are not ready to wear full out tie dye try accessorizing with a dyed scarf or handbag.

From top left clockwise: Tie Dye Bandage Skirt $44, Arden B;  Blue Tie Dye Tunic $ 38, Wearhouse.co.uk;  Free Tye Dye Dress $ 345; Acne; Sheer Cotton Scarf $ 74, Jigsaw; Be & D Convertible Bag $330, Nordstom

Trend Alert: The Chambray Shirt

From Left:  Boyfriend Shirt $ 26,Old Navy;Chambray Pintuck Shirt $46, Misselfridge; Faded Chambray Shit $ 78, Jcrew

I have recently acquired a Chambray shirt which I am totally obsessed with, I loved it so much that I even picked one up for my boy. I know, normally I am not this lame but we won’t be corny and wear them together. First off, Chambray is huge right now for the spring/summer. The classic less structured sister to the denim shirt will give you a laid back hippie vibe or can be quite preppy if worn with white denim. An oversize shirt paired with a floral sundress or skirt looks adorable. You can also pair a fitted Chambray shirt with your skinny jeans or a pair of cut off shorts.

Hester Street Fair this Saturday in LES

Calling all flee market shoppers, the Hester Street fair will be opening this Saturday and we are pumped. There will be 60 booths that will be a mix of vintage, crafts, and food. According to old fair-goers, “There is hardly a square foot of ground in Hester Street that is not covered with people during the day. The whole place seems to be in a state of perpetual motion, and the occasional visitor is apt to have a feeling of giddiness.”

The Hester Street Fair is located on the corner of Hester and Essex streets. Take the F train to East Broadway or F,J,M,Z to Delancey. Saturday April 24th, and Sunday April 25th from 10a.m.-6p.m. (and every weekend from April to December)

If you know me then you know that I am a huge fan of Buffalo Exchange. The buy, sell, trade resale store is always stocked with a variety of vintage and new designer clothing including one of a kind accessories. It is so fabulous if you have the patience to sort through clothing. Buffalo Exchange bills itself as sustainable company that works to protect the environment by reusing and recycling clothing so it is no surprise that they will be honoring Earth Day.

For all you animal/fashion lovers this Saturday, April 24th, all sale items at Buffalo Exchange will be offered for one dollar! All proceeds from the Dollar Day Sale will benefit the Don’t Trash Wildlife campaign of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal protection organization.

So it seems that I keep posting about shoes lately but I saw these on Highsnobette and think they are awesome. If only I had money to spend... Love the height of these heels, the fringed details, and the cool graffiti like pattern. Definitely a shoe to covet.

If you feel like they are worth the splurge they are available at Open Ceremony

Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I'd give a few ideas for living a greener life.

- Recycled clothing.  Thrift stores, consignment shops, and flea markets can have some really great finds.  I know people who have gotten some designer pieces for a few dollars (which also helps if you're on a budget...).  This way you're helping the environment and looking fabulous while doing it.  On the other side, if you have clothes that you never wear or that don't fit, try donating them to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Big Brother/Big Sister, or any other similar organizations.

- If you're not into used clothing, there are also plenty of eco-friendly and organic brands around.  Some of these are H&M's Garden Collection, Loomstate, American Apparel, and Naya, but there are so many more.  Even just sticking to cotton instead of synthetic fabrics can help.

- Get a library card.  I know taking out a book from the library seems a bit antiquated, but this is another way to save money and be good to the world too.

- Use alternative transportation.  This could be public transportation, walking, or biking.  According to a study from the MTA, city transit riders help curb the release of 17.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere per year.

- Try going to restaurants that use locally grown food.  Eat Well Guide allows you to search for these restaurants in your area.

- Use green beauty products.  Make sure you do your research first because a lot of companies try to hop on the green bandwagon without actually being eco-friendly, but there are some good brands out there.

Hat Attack: This years best hats for spring

From top left clockwise: Stripe Straw floppy hat $13, available at Styleforless;  Don Mon Straw Fedora $ 40 available at ecoconsious market;  Reiss Wide Brim Trilby $ 53, available at Asos; Eugenia Kim for Target $17, available at Target ; Straw floppy $ 13 available at stylesforless.com ; Southern Fedora $11, available at Forever 21;  Jersey Hat $40, available at Topshop.

We are really digging the hippie-esque look of hats this spring. Whatever you may fancy there are definitely styles to suite anyone. Whether it is a floppy sun-hat, straw fedora, or a vintage men’s bowler, the hats this season evoke a sense of casual glamour. Accessorize your floral sundresses and romper's to create a fabulously chic outfit.

I came across the spring line of Collina Strada handbag's and really like the Aztec, geometric details of the backpacks. The handbags have a vintage look yet modern at the same time. The best part is they are eco-friendly, made from 100% organic canvas and vegetable dyed leather.  Find them here

Subway Connection

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Friday, April 16, 2010 0 comments
I seem to have a lot of stories with the makings of a romantic comedy, but without the happily-ever-after ending.  I'm still waiting for one of them to actually work out, but, in the mean time, I don't really mind all of these beginnings- at least they add a little excitement to life. One recent encounter actually did remind me of a movie script.
I was on the subway on the way to work and it was the most crowded I had seen it in a long time, one of those days where every person seems to be in a terrible mood despite the fact that it was only a week before Christmas.  While I waited on the platform, I kept making eye contact with one guy, seemingly the only person besides myself who wasn't ready to kill someone.  Finally a train came that wasn't too crowded for us to hop on and this guy (let's call him Joe) and I made some light conversation after he offered me the bar that he had been holding onto.  Joe and I were getting off the same spot and coincidentally he knew one of my co-workers from the gym.  We said our goodbyes without exchanging any information, I actually don't know if I'd even given him my name, but he said he hoped to see me again.
With the business of the holidays I completely forgot about our subway encounter, until three weeks later when I got a phone call at work.  Joe had run into my colleague and mentioned he met me and wanted to speak to me again and my colleague gave him my number.  I thought it was pretty sweet that he worked to track down my number (I tried to ignore the stalker-ish aspect since he seemed harmless enough), so when he asked me to lunch I said yes.
Lunch was nice enough, but I didn't feel any real spark, which is unfortunate because I thought it would have been a nice story to tell our grandchildren.  We still talk occasionally, but I didn't exactly get the romantic comedy ending I was looking for - maybe next time.

Forever 21's Spring 2010 Lookbook

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Wednesday, April 14, 2010 0 comments
The latest lookbook for Forever 21’s Spring 2010 collection was posted yesterday on Nitrolicious. It includes a slew of animal prints, graphic prints and bold necklaces worn by bronzed models in bright pink lipstick.

I went into Forever 21 today located in Herald Square and I was quite surprised by the lack of clothing they had for that location. Usually that store is bursting with new inventory. There was also NO accessories besides a few headbands and handbags! It was quite shocking. I did manage to find a cute pair of floral shorts and a gray cotton bow headband for a total of $21 bucks.

McDonald's Germany has New York City Themed Cupcakes

Posted by Francesca Alfano On Monday, April 12, 2010 0 comments
I wanted to post these last week when I found out but unfortunately didn’t get around to it. We LOVE cupcakes over here (I often find it hard just to stay away from Crumbs bakery) The McDonald's in Germany has just introduced New York City inspired cupcakes. The cupcakes are named after four neighborhoods in Manhattan; East Village, Chelsea, SoHo, and Central Park (Even though this is not really a neighborhood we'll still eat it) Eater.com was nice enough to translate the description for each flavor:

Chelsea Cupcake: "Chelsea was once terribly hip, sometimes not, and then again. Was that too fast? Well, that's New York. My tip: just relax on the harbor or simply sit by the lake and a chocolate cup-cake with your personal feeling happy period Chelsea."

Central Park Cupcake: "Tip and central park? Throughout New York hangs out here. My tip: Just get yourself a cup strawberry-cake, sit down at any bank and enjoy your very personal Central Park Moment."

SoHo Cupcake: "Sightseeing? Everything here is worth seeing: catch at the Houston Street, and work your way slowly through the south. Or get just a bit of Soho in your home country: After a spree breath through your town a bit and draw the view once again small. At Vanilla cup-cake, perhaps. But only briefly, because he is sooo yummy."

East Village Cupcake: "Here come from the most famous artists in New York. And here in dozens of tourists looking for new art galleries. I now play Andy Warhol once and tell everything what I like to art. This cappuccino cup cake = for example: all great art."

I'm not sure how to feel about the characters portrayed for the SoHo and East Village cupcakes, they don’t look like hipster-enough for me.If these come to New York I think I may just have to try one. What do you think?

MTV’s hit show Jersey Shore basically became everyone’s guilty pleasure last winter and even though the cast of the show made us feel better about ourselves, we sort of developed a small crush on the tan guidos. Check them out here posing with supermodel Bar Refaeli in this photo spread shot by Terry Richardson for Interview. Looking good boys!
